Winter Turnout
By Ann Zerega
You showed me the beauty of a winter day
despite the cold and snow
You snorted impatiently as I opened the gate
straining – to be let go
All your energy shot through your skin
you reared and challenged the sky
I let you go
when you came down
and turned you loose to fly
Winter Turnout – Inspired by Rasta
In 1995, I was fortunate enough to find a great dressage instructor (Mary McGrath) with a great horse named Rasta for lease in Palatine, IL. That winter when there was lots of snow in the paddocks, I turned Rasta out for some playtime.
Watching him play in the snow was so beautiful, I forgot how cold it was and the snow sliding in over my boot tops. Now that I live in California, I love watching my horse Dixie playing in the mud puddles during the winter rains.
