December 2010

The East Bay Chapter was proud to sponsor the New 2011 Test Symposium, held at the beautiful Yarra Yarra Ranch December 11th.  As the event date drew near, it became clear that there was a tremendous excitement for this symposium – the responses were already well past 100 people and still coming in! The Chapter was fortunate to have two very experienced volunteers coordinating this event, Dayle Kuhn and Laurie Daniel-Smith, so as reservation requests came pouring in at record pace on the Equestrian Entries website, additional chairs, accommodations, tables and volunteers were rounded up and ready to meet the need.  Last minute rider substitutions were graciously handled by Carolyn Adams and Ruth Shirkey, who each rode twice in the clinic to demonstrate several levels to our audience.

On Symposium day, over 135 attendees where check in and we were prepared with as many programs, test copies, chairs as well as tables to hold the generous bounty of yummy pot luck dishes and beverages people contributed to be enjoyed throughout the event.

The knowledge of our two judges, Creekey Routson and Heidi Gaian was very insightful, impressive and valuable.  Practical advice was shared on how best to present your horses strengths and incorporate them into the new movements to maximize your scores.  The energy between the two judges was extremely positive, entertaining and helpful.  Creeky and Heidi efficiently and effectively fielded well structured questions from the audience between the demonstration rides.

Although the event was scheduled to last four hours, the afternoon seemed to go by quickly and many attendees stayed until the very last ride.  Yarra Yarra Ranch was a perfect location to accommodate such a large, well attended event, and we thank Carolyn and Patrick Adams for being such kind hosts.

We were able to draw from the symposium a greater insight as to how a judge may view and score a test.  Many attendees commented that they would like to learn more about the intricacies of judging and would enthusiastically attend a similar symposium concentrating on perhaps one or two levels at a time, or freestyles.  The East Bay Chapter is excited to be offering many additional educational events such as this Test Symposium to our members in the very near future, so please visit the website often for updates!

Thank you Judges, Hosts and Test Riders!

When I was initially approached by another East Bay CDS member a few years ago to be a volunteer on the Show Committee I was definitely willing but a little reluctant at the same time.  Oh my! I have a long, daily work commute to San Francisco, frantic job, horse, home, husband, and cat and dog responsibilities!  I was worried that I would feel stressed and stretched, but then I thought, gee, my schedule is really not that different than anyone else’s, so I committed to the challenge.

On Show Day, I found that I thoroughly enjoyed myself as a volunteer and especially felt a new, deep appreciation for those dedicated individuals who had donated their time to make all of shows in which I was a competitor possible.  Little did I realize the number of hours the Show Committee spends around someone’s kitchen table on a Sunday afternoon collecting entries, coordinating minute by minute ride schedules, delegating and dividing responsibilities, ensuring proper care of the Judge and generally thinking of every possible detail to make my show day experience as a competitor the very best it could be.  It was an awakening moment for me on many levels!  All of these show volunteers are committing their precious, personal, discretionary time and applying their own individual areas of expertise so I can enjoy six minutes of competition.  Wow, that was humbling and I realized that my few hours of donated volunteer time at a show to help someone else experience those 6 minutes of heart-thumping competition was well spent.  It also made me feel good in the process!

I encourage you to consider being a volunteer at one or several of our CDS East Bay Chapter events.  You will meet your fellow Dressage enthusiasts, make new friends as well as gain insight to the background details of hosting a show, dinner, clinic, lecture or any other future, fun event your Chapter has in store for you. We look forward to seeing you at these events, as a participant or valued volunteer!

Also, we send out a heart felt thank you to all of our amazing East Bay CDS Chapter volunteers, your commitment and dedication is appreciated beyond measure!

Happy Star

Finding the Holy Grail at Osierlea – by Jill Owens

December 14, 2010

Although I’ve been studying dressage for the better part of a decade, three years ago I realized I didn’t really know how to ride. Since then I’ve been on a quest—through lessons, clinics, and reading—for the Holy Grail of riding: my Core. Recently, I attended Osierlea’s Fall Extravaganza, taking along my youngster Pokani to demo-ride. [...]
